If you haven’t heard about Pittsburgh’s latest spitta Mac Miller, well then you’re now in luck. Recently unleashed is his new project K.I.D.S. (Kickin Incredibly Dope Shit). Signed to Rostrum Records just this summer, Mac has solidified himself as the next up out of the steel city, following in the steps of his label mate Wiz Khalifa. If you’ve yet to catch his 4 part video series called “Day in the Life” which has led up to the mixtape, be sure to watch it (here). This recent high school grad need not apply for college, his career as an MC looks promising enough to stack up to a Bachelor’s in the art of MCing. Download link and tracklist after the jump.

Download: CosteLL – Not Another Mixtape

August 5, 2010 by N Middz

Here at The Eargasm we have always prided ourselves first and foremost on providing our readers with the opportunity to discover new and unique artists. That being said, after you download Not Another Mixtape it’s likely that CosteLL will be added to that list of artists that make you glad you frequent our site.

The aformentioned mixtape is appropriately titled in both a definitive and clever fashion as the Queens wordsmith’s latest project is not just one more assortment of tracks to run through once and then dismiss for all time, as is the fate of so many mixtapes. At the same time the artist who slings poetic verses in true 90’s Queens fashion is making a statement that yes, he know’s you’re sick of all these damn mixtapes.

The freestyles that introduce the beginning portion of the project are undoubtedly full of creative, original and thought provoking rhymes and hard hitting beats. CosteLL presents a talent for both street anecdote’s on tracks like “B.M.F.” and food for thought on “I Need a Dollar.” Some other memorable cuts include his ode to tweets “Twitter Crush” and a tribute to the late king of pop titled “In God’s Hands.”

If you enjoy real hip-hop that’s reminiscent of a golden era of street dreams and storytelling but with a modern bounce, this is something you’ll want to hear. Grab Not Another Mixtape from the download link below and peep the tracklist after the jump.

Anita Tijoux

Chile’s Lyrical Tremor

With the always entertaining SXSW festival coming to a close just a few short days ago, there are numerous artists whose buzz will most definitely sky rocket from this point forward. The results of such a respected and closely watched annual tradition are that new names start to appear on blogs, in print and on record label radars. There are always a handful of pleasant surprises, talented individuals that are relative unknowns among popular music fans show up and display a mastery of their craft or present a unique formula that cooks up something innovative and refreshing.

While my eyes and ears fell upon several new talents that took the stage in Austin this year, one in particular was far different from the rest in more ways than one. Hailing from a nation known for wine of the highest caliber, the Andes Mountains and author/Nobel Prize winner Pablo Neruda, Anita Tijoux is an originator in her home country’s music scene.

It’s a clear cut reality that after more than 30 years since the beginnings of the genre known as Hip-Hop, the music of choice for this generation’s youth has gone global and now influences virtually all aspects of our culture. I myself have traveled to parts of South and Central America and witnessed the reach of rap and other creations of the American recording industry blast through the speakers at the top local club where bottle service can be as low as $50 USD. Chile is a premiere if not the leading producer of all things Hip-Hop in Latin America. Tijoux is a known and respected MC in her native land. Not only can she flow with the best of her mic gripping compadres, but her rapport is that of an ambitious and inspiring female artist.

Anita made her way to the trillest event of the season not in search of radio spins or reeling in hit making producers but rather to give her lyrics and sound to anyone willing to listen. Her hopes to spread her gifts were met and then some as the interest in this foreign phenom has raised the brow of the nation’s music media. She was included in the highlights of the SXSW festival in Billboard Magazine’s March issue. Keeping her in good company, Mayer Hawthorne, Maluca, Neon Indian, Yelawolf, Mickey Factz, Yacht and U-N-I were among the other key players that stood on the stage that week.

It’s never been easy in the rap game to be an artist with a rhyme book and a foreign passport, let alone being a female one. The Chilena has accumulated a number of noteworthy records under her belt since first gaining notoriety in the late 90’s as a member of the all girl rap crew Makiza. The group was at the core of the Chilean scene which had become a hot bed, thus garnering the group a deal with Sony Records. After a successful album and a hit single, Anita deviated from the road of super-stardom and decided to break up the group. She returned to France where she was born and lived up until her teen years due to her family being in a state of political exile during the dreaded dictatorship of one General Pinochet. She remained in France, musically idle from 2001 to 2004.

She was compelled to return to music in 2004, joining the funk group Aluzinati. Then in 2006 she made her presence known to a wider audience again when she was featured on the song “Eres Para Mi” by pop songstress Julieta Venega. This song particularly obtained the Latin rapper international buzz leading up to the release of her solo album Kaos in September of 2007. Her widely popular single “Despabilate” (which figuratively translates to: wake up) earned her a nomination at the 2007 Latin MTV Video Music Awards, along with another nomination for song of the year for the track with Venegas.

Recently in the fall of 2009 she released 1977 her second solo album named for the year of her birth. The album stayed away from the singing and pop styles she had been exhibiting in recent years and was more geared towards raw and genuine rapping (in both Spanish and French), touching on her real life experiences and everyday situations that we as humans must deal with. The album was celebrated heavily in the underground rap circles of Chile and has since been picked up by a US label to be released this April.

Anita is a veteran of making music but refreshingly new to the majority of Americans. Although almost none of her words on a record are in English, music is a universal language and we can all appreciate what Tijoux has to offer. With the demeanor and look reminiscent of singer Nelly Furtado and the delivery and versatility of Calle 13’s Residente, she may cause you non-Spanish speakers to copy and paste her lyrics into Google translator sooner than you think.

Beat!Beat!Beat!

I admit, of late we have been extremely guilty of being slightly more skewed towards urban music than was originally intended. A large portion of that was the inability to find quality music that didn’t sound like it was A) recorded in someones garage and B) didn’t come from hipsters that felt they were just cool enough looking to make people listen to them.

So were back on our grind and I apologize for the absence.

The picture above is not a hair campaign, although the guys have enviable locks. The following is one of my new favorite groups. Beat! Beat! Beat!. The best thing to come out of Germany in a minute in my opinion. their tracks “Fireworks” was my introduction to this radded out band and I must admit it was enough to bait the hook.

Beat! Beat! Beat! – Fireworks by TheEargasm

Not sure what their US touring plans might be, but they’re all over Europe, perhaps I’ll be ale to catch the guys live on my next trip to LDN in August.

Definitely check them out. From what I see the Band only has a Myspace page, which is all the reason to visit the wild wild west of Myspace that you might not have visited int he past.. I dunno..year or so. Both of their projects are available for purchase on iTunes and Amazon. And thank you Beat!Beat! Beat! for breaking our drought.

After a series of 2009 fails from Southern artist who were making noise but weren’t really making noise in my opionion, a young ATLien whom we’ve had our eye on for a minute cast a few rocks into the pond and made waves.

His 2009 Mixatpe, Diary of An Atlanta Brave was sponsored by urban clothing brand 10 Deep, and we expect 2010 to be an even bigger year for Donnis.

The former member of the United States Air Force first caught our ear on “Party Works”. Since then we’ve kept our ears peeled for new material and are happy to see a steady following accumulate behind the young artist. His sound is southern, but he has the big city swagger of any other artist in his class. Prior to his US campaign Donnis made wave sin Tokyo with a steady dedicated grind that ultimately paid off, earning a name for himself among the Tokyo hip Hop scene. Get familiar …

Maluca

You may have seen the video posted last week, or perhaps noticed that it’s our video of the week. We post so much hip hop and male dominated genres, that when we find a female we like.. We love her. We love Maluca.

maluca

Born in the Bronx and raised in Manhattan by Dominican parents, Maluca is New York. Any resident of NY knows that Latin roots run deep throughout the city, Maluca effectively combines her roots with the music that is today; edgy, full of punch, and enough to make you forget that half the country is practically out of work. She is signed to Mad Decent, and I have gotten HEAT before for supporting the music that comes out of that camp, but its good music that cannot be denied. After meeting Diplo at a karaoke bar, the two starting working together resulting in her debut single “El Tigeraso” , an infectious track that draws on her Dominican electro Merengue roots.

I’ve had the opportunity to see Maluca perform twice, where she showcased her wide range of influences – from artists such as ESGSavannah BandWu-TangGil Scott HeronNina Simone to styles like MerengueSalsaCumbiaHouseDisco, and Freestyle. She’s self proclaimed “1/2 dominican 1/2 Pain in the ass.”

There’s a vibe that artist from Cali exude. This cool calm, unrushed, seemingly effortless flow. Rich Hil, not from Cali, but he personifies that same type of delivery. He’s mellow with just enough punch to remind you that he’s a New Yorker at heart. My boy over at Dirty Jeenuis first played his tracks for me and I’ve been interested every since. Forcing me to request the link to the mixtape “The Lonely Limo” from Sean over at the Famous Firm.

You gotta appreciate Rich Hil. He doesn’t try to act hard, like some artist that apparently aren’t. He’s honest about whom his father is (only one of the most influential American Designers of the 90s). Here’s a hint, Hil is the beginning of his last name. He obviously has connections and could flood the masses with his music, but I believe he takes a more honest approach and lets fans migrate to him by choice.

Ninjasonik

Don’t ask me what I was doing in a strip club on Sunset Blvd in the early hours of August 28, 2009. That is beside the point. Surrounded by near nakedness, I was ready to drop my panties with excitement when I heard Ninjasonik’s “Somebody Gonna Get Pregnant” start bumping through the speakers.

happyendingsninjasonik

“I have to tweet about this!” I screamed to one of my girls, who looked at me like I’d just asked her for a dollar bill or something. Clearly she had no idea why I was so excited.

Ninjasonik, a Brooklyn based trio made up of Rev “Ja Ja” McFly, Telli “Bathroomsexxx” Gramz and DJ Teenwolf, are like nothing you have ever heard before. Long before boys on the dance floor were rockin skinny jeans, Ninjasonik were rockin dance floors with their infectious “Tight Pants”. Since dropping their debut mixtape “The Mix” in April 2007 and doing their first performance in August 2007, Ninjasonik now have their work cut out for them. “We constantly creating and constantly thinking, like we are never not working” Telli recently said in an interview “…there’s no limit to us, we’re not even 2 years old yet man.”

Self Proclaimed punk musicians, Ninjasonik have invaded other genres and have made magic with artists such as Spank Rock, Theophilus London and The Death Set just to name a few who are on the “Darth Bano” Mixtape, presented by Mishka which dropped in August 2009. Darth Bano, defined by Telli Gramz “…is me my alter ego. They call me Bathroomsexxx. When I get at full power, super-sane Bathroomsexxx level I transform into Darth Bano and me and my apprentices will conquer what y’all call the music industry.” They called it the first wave, the practice, the warm up. Ninjasonik warned the people to be prepared as a lot will follow. And they were serious.

“If you have any political/social/personal space sensibilities prior to a Ninjasonik show, prepare to throw that shit out the window.” -URB, Spring 2009 (Next 100)

Next they hit us with the Art School Girls album (available on itunes) along with a Ninjasonik x Mishka Tee Shirt. You can also see their handsome faces appearing in Rocksmith Lookbooks. Ninjasonik will be performing for Wiz Khalifa’s “Deal Or No Deal” Official Release Party on November 24th in NYC and at Good Life New Years Eve Party in Boston.

Renminbi

If TheEargasm.com could have a protoype, Brooklyn based duo Renminbi would be a fine example. I was introduced to this eclectic duo by my boys over at ihearditon.com, and it very well may be the best musical gift they bestowed upon my ears in the month of October.

Renminbi

Theres an assload of comparisons on their myspcae page made by several different media outlets, I will keep it simple, Renminbi reminds me of all of Coldplay and Radioheads selling points. And it just so happens to be two women, so take that. Renminbi, which means “the peoples currency” have an excellent EP titled “Surface” which you can download on the link below, following my favorite song on the EP.

I guess one of the things I am loving about this band, is they obviously use live studio instrumentation. So many artist have strayed away from that and have become track artist. I’m proud to say that the Eargasm really did come across a gem in Renminbi. Were loving them like, “Little Dragon” status.

Another artist from Sweden. A brief email from his marketing company introduced me to him. Considering that Mr.Hudson’s “Supernova” left me feeling rather void today, this picks right up where it left off, before it completely drops.

Erik Hassle is not yet a household name, nor can he attest to the blog stardum other artist have conjured, but this twenty year old singer will instantly woo many American ears once they get a good listen of him. The track included , “Hurtful” has been a hit over in the Sweden and is slowly climbing its was into the iTunes collections of UK listeners.

I’m a fan.
