Twitter Tools for Musicians

Twitter is a great broadcasting tool, and that means it can be very useful to you as a musician. Sharing your own music or others’ music that you like means you are leveraging the power of Twitter’s network to personally recommend your favorite tunes. Posting these music recommendations to your followers on Twitter expands the number of people that hear the music, which in many cases can be your own. From there, you can encourage your followers to retweet your original update, spreading your music to their Twitter followers as well.
This is just one way in which your shared music can become viral through Twitter’s social network. Depending on where you have your music uploaded and available for others to hear via the web, there are some handy Twitter tools that can help you spread your music content to your Twitter network and beyond. Some of these tools are somewhat more automated, while others are manual and retain complete control over the content that gets tweeted through your profile.
Imeem
Imeem is likely a site where you already have some of your music content posted, whether it be a song or a video to stream. Imeem added a “tweet this” button earlier this year, giving you a very easy way in which to share your content directly with Twitter. No additional signing in necessary, if you already are logged into Twitter. The other great thing about the “tweet this” button on Imeem pages is that others can tweet your content, even if you didn’t tweet it first. Sharing the link to your Imeem page can be another indirect way of encouraging others to share your content across the social web. As Imeem has recently been acquired by MySpace, there will likely be deep integration between the two services in the near future, which will make it even easier for you to share your music content.
Twitterfeed
If you need a more automated option for sharing your music content on Twitter then try Twitterfeed. With this tool you can customize your feeds to be automatically posted on Twitter, based on time intervals and other settings. Now when you share your music content on the RSS-supported sites you run through Twitterfeed, they will be posted on Twitter as well. This is an easy way to share content to your Twitter followers, bu as it is automated through RSS feeds it can overwhelm your Twitter stream quickly and easily. Keep your followers from “unfollowing” you by keeping high intervals between automated Twitter posts and interjecting with personal, manual tweets.
Twt.fm
This is a Twitter tool that is designed for musicians and music lovers alike. With Twt.fm the service effectively recreates the look and feel of your Twitter page, but features only the music tweets you push through Twt.fm. The service pulls these tweets from Imeem, which works well if you already have your content uploaded to the Imeem site. From there, tweets are archived and made searchable, giving you a web profile that combines your Twitter and music sides.

Twiturm
(Short for Twit Ur Music)
This tool is designed specifically for those that would like to share their own music content on Twitter. Upload content, and tweet it immediately. Twiturm works kind of like TwitPic, but for your music. The Twiturm site has a Twitter-centric community all its own, so others that use this site will have a chance to come across your content in this way as well. If you manage to get a top spot on Twiturm’s front page, you increase your visibility to other Twitter users that are interested in finding good music.
